IAFF Local 2595 is the exclusive bargaining unit which represents paramedics employed at King County Medic One (KCM1). KCM1 is overseen by King County EMS, which is a division of Seattle-King County Public Health.
Local 2595 currently represents 78 members responsible for multiple disciplines within KCM1. Our local has four platoons. Each platoon has one paramedic supervisor (MSO), an acting paramedic supervisor (AMSO), and seventeen paramedics who staff 9 full-time medic units (24/7) strategically stationed throughout south King County. Four day shift MSOs are assigned one of four staff positions including ALS training, BLS training (for all of King County), emergency management, and operations. Additionally, our members staff special events such as the White River Amphitheater, Seattle International Raceway, and a host of local community events.
All members are required to be trained and certified thru the University of Washington at Harborview Medical Center. As a third public service our members are not firefighters, however, many of our members began their careers in the fire service. Several members have come from local fire departments within our jurisdiction.
Local 2595 paramedics respond to over 16,600 ALS alarms each year. Our local has taken a proactive approach to reducing unnecessary alarms by working with management to tighten dispatch protocols. This collaborative effort has resulted in a reduction of unnecessary alarms, which would otherwise have grown exponentially year over year.. Ultimately, this effort has reduced overall operating costs to the taxpaying public we serve and has reduced the frequency of exposure to hazards encountered during emergency responses.
Local 2595 is an active member of the Washington State Council of Firefighters (WSCFF).
Local 2595 members have participated in multiple studies which have led to improvements in pre-hospital care throughout the world. A link has been provided to the KCM1 website which discusses these activities.
